Hydropower on existing infrastructure such as drinking water networks is already a common practice in Switzerland. It allows to recover part of the energy dissipated in the pressure reducers by producing electricity. In Switzerland, it represents today more than 100 GWh / year and an equivalent potential remains unexploited. The Duo Turbo turbine was recently developed to harvest this potential, in particular for sites with significant variations in pressure and discharge in the Alpine region. The goal of the present project is to develop an urban version of this turbine. The turbine will be installed on a pilot site, equipped with a dynamic control to actively regulate the pressure in the different branches of the distribution network. At the same time, part of the energy produced will be used to supply electricity to sensors that monitor the pressure and the discharge in the different branches of this network, a need that is growing with the concept of "smart cities".
