In this work, the following issues of Vacuum Space Insulation (VSI) have been studied at first: application fields, state of the art, potentials, requirements’ specifications, system considerations for large volumes, vacuum boundary walls, and getter effect. Essential findings for building a VSI have been thereby found out. Furthermore, a setup for spacers have been designed and constructed. Test measurements have been carried out to check the pressure resistance and thermal conductivity in vacuum for both ball spacers and parallel-filament ones. The ball spacers have been proven to be very suitable. A 20 µmthick steel band with a soft string of parallel glass fibers for strengthening has been proven to be very  appropriate for a thermally good and cost-efficient edge setup. Experiments have shown that it was possible to cement the edge band and the boundary wall gastight. The “corner issue” remains unsolved, though. Concerning the reduction of irradiation, it seems that a whole-surface textile holder for the aluminum foil was a key decision towards a successful cost-efficient implementation.
