Kurzbeschreibung
(Deutsch)
Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)
The previous project “Applications and potentials of vacuum space insulation” has shown an energy-saving potential regarding the Swiss hot water pipes of more than a million MWh/a. The execution of VSI for hot water pipes should be investigated, theoretically evaluated, and experimentally verified with functional models. This should occur in terms of VSI-equipped new installations and – at least theoretically - as a retrofit of existing pipes.

Schlussbericht
(Englisch)
By considerably improving the thermal isolation of hot water pipes of homes and industrial buildings,  a very large amount of energy can be saved. In this document, it is shown that with the thermal isolation of hot water pipes by vacuum slit technology (VSI) 75% to 90% of the lost energy could be saved, compared to conventionally isolated pipes (according SIA norm). This fact has been verified by building functional prototypes of VSI hot water pipes and compared the measurements with thermal models and calculations of it. Because of that, it is obvious that not only VSI isolated hot water pipes are technically feasible, but also that it’s costs are amortized within a few years because of its high energy saving rates. Highly interesting is the fact that it is possible to first install the VSI pipes, and evacuate the air out of it later. Further consideration indicate that it is possible to retrofit existing pipes with a VSI system. But the case where the VSI system is installed together with the warm water pipes is much more convenient, that’s why this approach is favored.
