Nach 2-jähriger Bauzeit konnte das Kleinwasserkraftwerk Buchholz auf der Gemeindegrenze Gossau/Flawil Ende Oktober 2006 wieder seiner Bestimmung übergeben werden und produziert nun klimaneutralen Strom. Dank der Reaktivierung der Wasserkraft an der Staumauer Buchholz konnten den Anforderungen des Naturschutzes (Erhalt Feuchtgebiet von nationaler Bedeutung), des Hochwasserschutzes, sowie der Ökologie (Fischdurchgängigkeit) Rechnung getragen werden. Die Wasserkraftanlage selber wurde in die zu sanierende Stauanlage integriert (kein zusätzliches Gebäude), wodurch keine Restwasserstrecke entstanden ist. Die erstmalige Realisierung einer Fischschleuse in der Schweiz soll für Staustufen mit ähnlicher Problematik Signalwirkung haben.

By the commissioning of the mini hydro power plant Buchholz in October 2006, after more than 90 years of downtime, the evidence that also projects under difficult general conditions can be successfully implemented was furnished. Only with the implementation of the hydro plant it was possible to meet all requirements regarding nature conservancy (preservation of conservation area of national interest), flood protection and ecology (river continuum for fish). Due to the integration of the hydro plant into the dam body no additional structures (powerhouse) had to be built and no river stretch with residual flow was necessary. For the first time in Switzerland, a fish lock as a measure for fish migration was built and will serve projects with similar characteristics as paradigm.
