Kurzbeschreibung (Englisch)

The project will measure fracture toughness of the granitic rocks in the two main underground laboratories of Switzerland, Grimsel and Bedretto, under pure shear loading, with a particular focus on anisotropy. The results will significantly improve our ability to model fracture propagation in anisotropic rocks in order to aid improving hydraulic stimulation protocols for engineering permeability and connectivity in deep rock fracture networks for geothermal heat exchangers.
