Seasonal heat storage, 100 % solar heating, multifamily house, cost optimization, PV & heat pump
Description succincte
(Allemand)
Description succincte

The seasonal storage of heat in 100% solar single and multifamily houses is associated with higher investment cost and higher demand for storage space. This project analyses whether cost and used space can be reduced with the combination of a solar thermal and a PV & heat pump system. Therefore, an existing system will be monitored and new innovative concepts are simulated and op-timized.

At first glance, one would hardly believe that a simple water tank could be enough to bring heat from summer into winter. But in fact, a storage tank with a volume of 12 cubic meters or more is enough to supply an apartment with heat and hot water from solar collectors for the entire winter. Because such storage solutions have been relatively expensive up to now, scientists from the universities in Rapperswil and Lucerne have been searching for ways to make the technology more economical in two research projects. One approach is to reduce the volume of the storage tanks and thereby their costs through optimization.

In this project the concept of fully solar heated multifamilihouses with seasonal water storage has been analyzed and optimized. A monitoring concept has been developed and installed in a multifamily house in Huttwil which was finished in 2020. Simulations of the energy system have been implemented in TRNSYS and were calibrated with measured data from the first winter with partial occupancy. This system includes a detailed building, storage and collector model. This simulation deck has been completed with photovoltaics (PV) and a heat pump with outside air or the building slab foundation and other options as a heat source. Parameter variations for an optimal sizing of collector field, PV area, storage and heat pump size were carried out and the corresponding investment costs were estimated. The most promising combination of solar thermal collectors, PV-system, heat pump, slab foundation and shower heat recovery resulted in a 50% reduction of the required storage volume compared the the original standard system. This system not only covers the heat demand of the building, but is also able to produce part of the electricity needed by the households. The excess electricity production is fed into the grid. This optimization reduces the investment cost by about 10 %.
