In the framework of the project "Realization of a kinetic turbine for artificial canals", a new turbine and its test platform have been developed, built and installed in the artificial channel of the Lavey hydropower plant in 2017. For the first time in Switzerland, in this ephemeral open-air laboratory, the performance of a kinetic turbine was measured under real operating conditions. These performances could be compared successfully with those predicted by numerical simulation. The influence of flow conditions, the turbine's installation height and the inclination of the turbine axis could be studied. A power factor of more than 0.8 could be measured, which is very competitive compared to existing products. A power of more than 1.5 kW could be injected, thus exceeding the target value. During the summer of 2018, tests with measurements during a continuous week were carried out. A pre-study for the installation of a turbine farm was carried out to evaluate the possibility of reducing costs compared to the first built prototype and to simulate the optimal configuration of the number of machines and their sizes to reach 10 kW. Additionally, different support structures for the farm have been developed.
