Description succincte
(Anglais)

In Switzerland every year about 75% of all piglet castrations are performed using isoflurane anaesthesia
and 25% under injectable anaesthesia. Both of these standard methods are not satisfactory
from the animal welfare view (Enz et al, 2013a+b) as many animals show purposeful movements
during castration and analgesia is not guaranteed.
Recently in up to 14 days old piglets injectable anaesthesia was optimised by adding romifidine,
however not all piglets showed good anaesthesia followed by smooth recovery,
which was the aim of that project (Bettschart, 2015).

The current study will investigate if with local anaesthesia the incidence of
purposeful movements during inhalation anaesthesia can be reduced and which way of application
and dose-rate is ideal. In piglets older than 14 days (3-4 weeks and 5-6 weeks)
the standard injection anaesthesia will be combined with romifidine to find out,
if this will result in good quality anaesthesia followed by smooth recovery.

Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)

The current project has two major aims:

First it aims at testing if with local anaesthesia administered during inhalation anaesthesia piglets
can be prevented from movement during anaesthesia and if this results in reduced post-operative wind up.
It will be determined where the local anaesthetic is best adminstered (intrafunicularly or intratesticularly),
how long it takes minimally to full action and what dose rate can be recommended.

Second it aims at establishing injectable anaesthesia for piglets at age 3-4 or 5-6 weeks that
induces deep enough anaesthesia and analgesia to prevent reaction to surgical stimulation during castration
and results in smooth and complete recovery within 2 hours of its administration.
