(Gary D. Burch, Chairman, SolarPaces)In my last message in this space, I boasted that concentrating solar power (CSP) had crossed a threshold and cited several pending commercial-scale CSP projects as evidence that passage toward an energy market presence for CSP was beginning. I also cautioned that the road forward would not be all downhill. With a year of reflection behind me, I think both sentiments are proving accurate although, regrettably, with more emphasis on the caution than would have desirable. At this stage, I admit to a mistaken expectation that progress from threshold to real action would be faster than what has transpired. ...Table of Contents:- Foreword: G. SolarPACES – Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems – is an Implementing Agreement of the IEA (International Energy Agency) to facilitate technology development, market deployment and energy partnerships for sustainable, reliable, efficient and cost-competitive concentrating solar technologies by providing leadership as the international network of independent experts. The IEA-SolarPACES Task II – Solar Chemistry R&D – Operating Agent (OA), currently PSI, Switzerland, is responsible for task organization, operation, and reporting. International solar chemical research, development and demonstration efforts are coordinated in cost, task and/or information-sharing activities. Two annual SolarPACES ExCo Meetings, one annual SolarPACES Task II Meeting, several IEA-HIA Task 25 Meetings, and major solar conferences (SolarPACES and ASME) provide a forum for presenting and discussing major technological achievements. The SolarPACES Annual Report chapter on Solar Chemistry Research helps disseminating up-to-date technical and scientific information.
