Das Ziel des Projekts ist die quantitative Szenarienanalyse für das globale Energiesystem. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Weltenergierat werden mögliche Entwicklungen in der Energiegewinnung (fossil, nuklear und erneuerbare), in deren Umwandlung und im Endverbrauch in einem detaillierten Kostenoptimierungsmodell mit Zeithorizont Jahr 2050 untersucht. Das Modell umfasst 15 Weltregionen und wird als Open-Source Modell ausgelegt.

Etwa neun Milliarden Menschen werden die Welt im Jahr 2050 bevölkern. Die globale Wirtschaftsleistung wird mindestens doppelt so hoch sein wie heute. China und Indien sind auf bestem Weg, Europa und Nordamerika als grösste Wirtschaftsräume abzulösen, während die Bevölkerung in Afrika am schnellsten wächst. Was das in Sachen Energieversorgung, CO2-Emissionen und Rohstoffvorkommen für die Welt bedeutet, hat das PSI zusammen mit dem Weltenergierat untersucht.

Scenarios are alternative views of the future which can be used to explore the implications of different sets of assumptions and to determine the degree of robustness of possible future developments. While most widely known scenarios are normative, the WEC has adopted a different, exploratory approach. ‘Normative’ in this context means that the scenarios are being used to drive the world towards a specific objective such as a particular atmospheric CO2 level. In contrast, the WEC with its exploratory scenarios Jazz and Symphony, attempts to provide decision makers with a neutral fact-based tool that they will be able to use to measure the potential impact of their choices in the future.
