Im Auftrag des Kantons Zug wird die Zuger Glasmalerei von 1500 bis 1800 kunstwissenschaftlich erforscht und publiziert. Während ihrer Blütezeit im 17. Jahrhundert avancierte Zug neben Zürich, Schaffhausen und Bern zu einer der führenden und exportierenden Zentren schweizerischer Glasmalerei. Heute sind rund 1000 weltweit zerstreute zugerische Glasgemälde bekannt. Die Publikation erscheint in der Reihe des Corpus Vitrearum (Fortsetzung in die Neuzeit).

The Canton of Zug has commissioned a study of the art history of the stained glass from Zug produced between 1500 to 1800. At its highpoint in the 17th century, Zug became one of the leading centres for the production and export of Swiss stained glass, along with Zurich, Schaffhausen and Berne. Currently some 1000 works in stained glass originating from Zug are known to be distributed throughout the world. The research will be published as part of the Corpus Vitrearum series (- continuation into the post-medieval period).

Neben dem rund 360 Einzelnummern umfassenden Katalog der nachmittelalterlichen Scheiben und Scheibenrisse im Kanton Zug ist die Einbettung der zugerischen Glasmalerei in ihren historischen Kontext Hauptziel der Studie. Die Forschungen sollen den neuesten Richtlinien der kunstwissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung und Dokumentation des Corpus Vitrearum entsprechen und die im Kanton Zug befindlichen Scheiben - auch ausserkantonaler Herkunft - vollumfänglich und einheitlich erfassen. Die Publikation soll aber auch ein leicht verständliches Sachbuch für eine breite Leserschaft sein.

Project aims

In addition to the the catalogue of post-medieval stained glass panels and designs in the Canton of Zug, covering some 360 individual items, the positioning of the stained glass from Zug in its historical context constitutes a major objective of this project. The study will adopt the latest guidelines of the Corpus Vitrearum for art historical research and documentation, and will take into account all of the stained glass panels in Canton Zug - including those originating from outside the Canton -, using a standardised approach. Parts of the publication should however also be readily understandable to a wider public.

Das Projekt ist in Bearbeitung. Teilergebnisse flossen als Artikel und Katalogbeiträge in den neuen Führer des Museums in der Burg Zug (in Druck) und in die Publikation "Die Burg in Zug" (erscheint 2003) ein.

Die Ergebnisse werden in erster Linie als grundegende Corpuspublikation verfügbar sein. In einer zentralen Datenbank sowie Text- und Bilddokumentation werden zudem auch die ausserhalb des Kantons im In- und Ausland befindlichen Zuger Scheiben so eingehend als möglich erfasst werden. Im Forschungszentrum in Romont und im Museum in der Burg Zug wird damit künftig ein Instrument zur Verfügung stehen, das Wissenschaftlern und Laien gleichermassen zur Forschung und Information wertvolle Dienste leistet.

Transfer and application

Based on a central data-bank as well as both written and pictorial records, stained glass panels originating from Zug but now located elsewhere in Switzerland or abroad will also be documented as thoroughly as possible. This will then constitute a valuable resource for research or information purposes, available for consultation to both specialists and non-specialists alike, at either the Stained Glass Research Centre in Romont or the Museum in der Burg in Zug.
