The objective of the COST project SIMOVIX was the investigation of VCSELs with high single mode output power. Within this project we investigated the polarisation stability of VCSELs emitting at 850nm and developed a design that helps to stabilize the polarisation direction in oxide confined VCSELs. Another important topic was the suppression of higher order lateral modes. We compared various approaches and were able to achieve output powers between 3 and 4mW for 850nm devices. It turned out, that the lasers with highest single mode output power have serious drawbacks in reliability. However, for reliable devices single mode output powers exceeding 1.5mW could be demonstrated.
