The main objective of the Action was to increase the knowledge of radio system aspects for flexible personalised communications and to develop new modelling techniques and related planning tools. The Communication Technology Laboratory (CTL, Institut fuer Kommunikationstechnik) has made contributions mainly in the field of directional channel models, which included the elaboration of a parametric stochastic model for the indoor radio channel at 24 GHz. This model has been validated by means of extensive measurements with a new measuring system where the Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation-Maximization (SAGE) Algorithm has been employed for the determination of the direction of arrival of the impinging waves. The SAGE Algorithm has also been studied with regard to its application in CDMA mobile radio receivers using space and time diversity for the joint estimation of the channel parameters and detection of the transmitted symbols to cope with the near-far problem and to optimally exploit the available signal energy. Finally, system level channel models and their application to the evaluation of suitable data link control schemes have been considered.
