An alternative detector for time-of-flight mass spectrometer converting the ions into photons through scintillation was characterized using single event counting and ion packets measurements. With single ions, the relative efficiency of the detector was found to decrease as the mass of the impinging ion increases. Its efficiency was shown to be influenced by the number of ions. As a matter of fact, a minimum number of ions is required for efficient photo-production so that this detector is suitable for pulsed ion sources. Using a liquid matrix preparation, MALDI was used to determine stability constants of complexes in vacuum stable solvents such as glycerol. Crown ethers complexing with metal ions were used as test systems. This sample preparation was shown to improve sensibly the ability of MALDI to quantitatively measure complex formation.
