Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
In the first part of the project, the Swiss 1290 MHz wind profiler was operated in an airport area. The purpose was (a) to gather data on electromagnetic compatibility (emc) with aircraft and radar and (b) to prove its usefulness for detecting wind shear in airport regions. Based on results from this and other emc-studies, a worldwide frequency allocation for wind profilers was made by the authorities. In parallel, the algorithms used for deriving winds from profiler data were further refined. With the so-called multi-peak algorithm, data coverage could be enhanced while at the same time all suspicious data was eliminated. A novel algorithm based on fuzzy logic and neural networks was developed for discriminating signals caused by birds, precipitation and turbulence (i.e., wind). Observing system simulation experiments showed how a future wind profiler system would have to be integrated into existing observing networks and how its data would have to be included in the present numerical forecasting models. Finally, the wind profiler was used in two major research programs, namely and in the AMDOP (Analysis of Multiple Doppler radar) experiment for obtaining continuous wind observations.
