Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The research work performed in 1996 consisted of the following main parts. First we have taken part in a round-robin interlaboratory cooperation in the frame of COST 240 and have investigated the characteristics of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) when they are applied in four-wave mixing experiments (FWM). The use of SOAs for FWM has rapidly gained in importance for applications in optical communications in the last few years, thanks in part to the effort of COST 240. FWM permits to convert the optical carrier frequency of ultra-high speed amplitude-, frequency-, and phase modulated signals circulating in a fiber network into another optical frequency, thus increasing dramatically the capacity of the network. Second, we have designed and produced new amplifiers that have been processed for fourwave mixing applications. Some 1.5 mm and 2 mm long SOAs have been realised by using the process developed in the last years in our group. Those amplifiers have shown higher conversion efficiency and lower ASE noise degradation than all other devices. The devices were measured by several scientists associated with COST 240 and the results were presented in an international conference indicating that they were obtained in the COST collaboration. Third, we have adapted our set-up on external cavity lasers to be able to investigate wavelength and polarization dependent properties of semiconductor optical amplifiers in a simpler way that previously used and have reported our findings in one workshop organised by COST. We have again received the mandate by the Management Committee COST 240 to chair the Action for another year. We have organised the administration and the coordination of the Action and have presented the activity of COST 240 to external conferences and bodies. We have also organised a COST workshop in Budapest and a meeting in Engelberg to discuss the state-of-the-art of the scientific work and to propose activities for the future.
