Abstract
(English)
Information on knowledge, perceptions and attitudes of the population with regard to forests, forestry practices and public measures is necessary In order to improve the implementation of policy program's, and in particular the Federal Forest Law enacted in 1993. A questionnaire was sent to 2160 individuals and to 72 communal councilors in 6 cantons situated in the Alps respectively the Pre-Alps and the Jura. Answers were returned by well over 600 citizens and some 60 councilors. The findings refer in particular to the concepts and knowledge of the respondents; their associations with the term of forest; their judgement on the distribution of forest areas and on the state of forests; their views on the role and activities of forest owners; their reactions to current measures of forest protection and of public funding; and to the opinions of communal representatives on forestry issues. On the whole the results show a strong concern for environmental and nature conservation aspects and a preference for measures that support forest tending, natural regeneration as well as protective works against avalanche dangers. The project has been undertaken as contribution to the COST E3 program by the chair of forest policy and forest economics of the ETH Zurich. It has led to a follow-up project on forest related perceptions and attitudes of the population for the whole area of Switzerland.
