In order to exploit the enormous transmission capacity of optical fibers it is essential to use the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique. Within this action different structures for transparent optical networking utilizing WDM technique have been investigated. As a result, the WDM Gridconnect which is a WDM structure for meshed networks with regular grid topology has been proposed. Transit traffic and path lengths statistics in the overlaying transport system were calculated and used to investigate the impact of transmission technology limits for wide area networks. The stepwise extension of the network compatible with the WDM Gridconnect concept using passive optical components has also been considered.
