Abstract
(English)
How social movements interact with information and communication technologies (ICTs) is a topic of overriding interest mainly for political science and sociology. However, our research integrates a geographical dimension to this issue. Pursuant to the terms of both COST A14 'Government and Democracy in the Information Age', and Working Group 4 'ICTs and Social Movements',our argument focuses on the following points: - How do NGOs involved in promoting sustainable development agendas use ICTs (our analysis focuses on the role of internet) in terms of power (both external and internal). - To which extent do ICTs help NGOs to address the 'think globally and act locally' slogan. The research relies on different methodological approaches such as ' Web sites analysis ' and semi-direct interviews. The main results are: -ICTs are not neutral technical devices; their integration within the NGOs organization takes time; NGOs like WWF or ATTAC are still in the process of discovering the potential of ICTs. - It is too early yet to properly assess the power NGOs might gain, due to their using ICTs, within the social and political sphere. - The use of the full potential of ICTs is not accessible to all NGOs.
