Abstract
(English)
The COST Action 267 deals with research, development and applications of experimental techniques to determine the suitability of active photonic semiconductor components for optical signal processing in view of their implementation in high-speed optical communication systems. The Action operates with three Working Groups (WG). The Opto Speed company was active in WG2 that dealt with experiments for ultra-fast all-opical signal processing devices. We provided to the Action semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) devices fabricated by our company in Switzerland. The material used is the quartenary InGaAsP/InP and the wavelength of operation is around 1550 nanometers. The devices were very extensively used by 15 European laboratories for round-robin experiments. Our company became involved in COST 267 since its start end of 1998 because we wanted to promote the use of non-linear optical effects in semiconductor photonic devices that have considerable potential for fibre communications. We have delivered to the Action SOA samples of different geometry and composition. The final results indicate that our samples have excellent performance and are at the same level with samples from other large companies participating in the Action.
