Abstract
(Englisch)
MCP was launched in January 2000. It brings together a number of car and receiver manufacturers, network operators and research institutes. MCP provided the specification of an open multimedia car platform in a heterogeneous network and service environment. The MCP project built on results and achievements of the two predecessor projects MEMO (Multimedia Environments for Mobiles) and MOTIVATE (Mobile Television and Innovative Receivers). The MCP project is dedicated to three major streams of innovation:· Service definition and implementation based on use cases and requirements from the car driver and passengers.· Specification for an open multimedia platform in the car, which integrates communication, entertainment and positioning. Realisation of a first prototype based on a subset of this specification.· Specifications for the architecture of hybrid DVB-T/DAB/GSM/GPRS networks, including service hand-over and interoperability between different networks. The following technical achievements can be highlighted:· Specification of a novel overall architecture for an open and realisable multimedia car platform. · Design and programming of innovative MCP applications and prototype services for IFA2001.· New overall description of application and resource management for a car terminal. · Specification of the mobile API for navigation (GPS, Maps, Destinations). · Novel security model and certification procedure.· Definition of a mobility management client for effective connection of an open terminal to the specification and implementation of the hybrid network architecture based on DAB, DVB-T, and GSM heterogeneous network in mobile environments.· System tests of the mobile (diversity) receivers in laboratory tests and in the field.· Evaluation (simulation and analytical evaluation) of improvements by using transmitter diversity,· Evaluation of link-budget and traffic models for DVB-T Local Docking Stations (LDS) with very low transmit power,· Implementation of the MCP demonstrator hardware and software.· Presentation of the overall MCP system at IFA2001 in Berlin.· Definition of the MCP Terminal Basic Specification (TBS) as an input to implementers and specification organisations. The project contributed to the worldwide discussion about hybrid mobile communications and broadcast systems by presenting the project's results in several journals and at a number of conferences. The project itself organised together with the DRIVE project two international workshops. Results of the work were also reported to relevant standardisation bodies; i.e. DVB, ETSI, AMI-C. Further information is available at http://mcp.fantastic.ch .
