Progress during the reporting period (Jan.2001 to Dec.2001)
All partners have full filled their duties in terms of work foreseen in the project program. The obtained results of monitoring, satellite imaginary, cartography, sea floor bathymetry and their attributes are now under way to be incorporated into the GEOWARN data base and the GIS programming. All overlays can be generated and adapted to the orthorectified DEM and DLM models. This is the base for queries, correlation, rating, hazard and scenario modeling and multimedia programming for the final GEOWARN software package to be carried out in the third year of the project.
2D-, 3D-and 2D-GIS models, interactive cartographic multimedia system, (from DLM to DCM), integration and modelling (Work of ETHZ).
The second year of the GEOWARN project defined the final design-model of the GIS based database. The chosen software platform for this step is Arc/Info 8.1. (ESRI) linked to ACCESS (Microsoft). The entire acquired GEOWARN data set, specified within the workpackages WP1 to WP6, is now captured, corrected, georeferenced and unified within the database.
Based on different scenarios for scientific analysis, scientific query interfaces are designed and compiled. These are used in the conceptual design of the final GEOWARN software package. They are coded in Visual Basic with embedded procedures in SQL and Arc/Object library (Object-Oriented modules library made by ESRI).
Two independent applications based on standard web technologies are currently developed. They are running in standard web browsers. The first application serves to visualise and interactively explore the tomography data. The second application, which is now under development, consists in a map server. It represents the general frame of the final GEOWARN software product.
At present, the query interfaces performed on the spatial database and the web application for visualizing the tomographic data are already used in scientific analysis and various compilations. These tools allowed developing subsequent models and hypotheses
The following GIS data layers were elaborated or updated:
1. An update of the Digital Terrain Model of the Nisyros Island
2. A new Digital Terrain Model of the entire volcanic area (Nisyros, Kos, Yali).
3. The topographical data of the Nisyros Island has been completed.
The IKONOS satellite image of the Nisyros volcano has been orthorectified based on the mentioned Terrain Model.
Using the orthorectified IKONOS satellite image and the Digital Terrain Model, a 3D flight simulation was generated.

Public awareness and education on volcanic hazards (Work of ETHZ)
The Swiss television SF-DRS produced a short documentary film (20 minutes) describing the GEOWARN project. The film called 'Vulkanforschung' (volcanological research) is presenting the main aspects of the Nisyros volcanic activity and the principal directions of investigations developed within the GEOWARN project. The film also highlight several hazards like earthquakes or hydrothermal explosions that represent a real threat for the communities and tourists. The film was broadcast on 28.06.2001 by the SF-DRS in the frame of the 'MTW das Wissenschaftmagazin' (Scientific journal of Swiss television).
Most of the information can be obtained in the Internet website of the project http://www.geowarn.org. Every six months this web page will be updated.
