Abstract
(Englisch)
The Concerted Action 'Improving Efficiency and Quality of Health Networks in Urban Areas' with partners from Belgium, France, South Africa, Guinea, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, the Netherlands, Colombia, El Salvador, the Philippines, Switzerland and Germany (Co-ordination) is a response to rapid urbanisation as a global phenomenon, which creates complex chains of problems in an environment which is ever changing and calls for an integrated approach, interdisciplinary action and flexible support systems for the most affected population - the urban poor.
The General Objective of this Concerted Action is to improve urban health initiatives in the North and South alike, bringing together a critical mass of urban health specialists. The purpose is to enhance collaboration and networking between the different partners and to build a solid platform for a systematic exchange of experiences.
Along with the partners of the Concerted Action, activities of the Swiss Tropical Institute were implemented during the reporting period (January to December 2001) to identify, document and analyse experiences which fall under the theme of the health service delivery and organisation as well as urban environmental management. Discussions and reflection were conducted by the numerous partners involved in this component, in order to propose alternative practices and recommendations to decision-makers working on urban environmental issues.
With the aim to disseminate experiences as widely as possible to persons and institutions concerned with urban health care delivery, efforts have been undertaken to share the experiences relating to the Dar es Salaam urban health project and other ongoing activities in the field of urban health in N'Djaména, Ouagadougou and Douala. Various meetings, training sessions and workshops were organised during the reporting period and different publications were compiled.
