Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The project was set up as a Working Group due to an urgent need for companies, research centers, and the European Union, to develop a consensus on the optimum standard (scope, content and boundaries) for the next generation still image compression algorithm - JPEG 2000 - which will best serve the short, medium and longer term interests of the European economy. JPEG2000 is the next generation ISO standard for compression of still images that is under development at the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1 committee (also known as JPEG), to which all EUROSTILL partners contribute. The new standard will bring new functionalities and new performance to still image coding to address the requirements of today's and tomorrow's application needs. Current standards, such as JPEG, fail to meet such requirements. In such a standardization process it is necessary to coordinate European efforts and to develop consensus in order to ensure that European interests and needs are addressed in JPEG2000. The working group that had been set up by EUROSTILL met on a regular basis before JPEG meetings in order to prepare and coordinate for the meetings. In addition EUROSTILL also performs promotion activities of JPEG2000 within Europe. Several contributions were made by members of this working group to JPEG2000 and many initiatives took place to steer JPEG2000 activities so that needs of European companies and businesses are met by JPEG2000. Two workshops were also organized to report the activities of the members of the working group as well as JPEG2000 committee to a large public in the image processing community.
