Main Objectives of the DOLPHIN 2 project This project was proposed as an extension to the previous project 'DOLPHIN:Cooperation in Advanced Communications in Europe'. However, large part of the proposal was rejected and only conference organisation and IS&N book publication part was retained
The project had 2 main objectives: Ø The first objective of the project was to support the IS&N 99 Conference (to help find sponsors, organise the Conference, Provide publicity, publish Conference results), and also to help prepare for any following IS&N Conference. Ø The second objective was to edit and publish a book of high and consistent technical content, presenting the work and the results of ACTS Domain 5 (IS&N) projects.
Achievements There were only 3 workpackages: Management, Conference organisation, Book publication. Telscom participated only in non-administrative workpackages · IS&N 99 Conference With the help of Dolphin 2, the organisation of the IS&N 99 Conference was defined and put in place: structure, management system, sponsoring host, other sponsors, site, financial resources. The corresponding terms of reference were gathered in the deliverable D11. The IS&N 99 Conference was held in Barcelona in April 1999, with the help of Dolphin2. The objectives relative to this conference were met and the results published in a book (Proceedings of IS&N99). The conference was very successful (providing the state of the art technology overview from international experts, practical demonstrations of European Success stories in an industrial show case exhibit and Agent workshop) with participation of international delegates. A workshop on Agents, associated with the conference, was also supported by the project, in disseminating the call for participation through multiple media, through horizontal projects, conferences and web. Dolphin2 contributed to the preparation of IS&N2000. TELSCOM was a publicity manager for IS&N conference and AGENT workshop manager. · IS&N Book Dolphin2: - defined the objectives, target audience, structure, table of content, timing, of the IS&N Book - defined and set up the organisation for producing and reviewing the inputs from the projects - found a publisher - produced the specifications of the book (deliverable D21) - defined the framework - contacted the potential section editors and authors to get original contributions The book was built section by section reviewed according to the review process, and the master copy was delivered in January 2000. IOS press was selected as a publisher among three possibilities, who is a publisher of telecommunications management books and journals. It has international experience in Europe, USA and Japan. Final manuscript is almost 3 times the volume that the Project had planned to cover the full spectrum of IS&N Domain projects. TELSCOM was responsible for co-ordinating among the section editors, authors, reviewers and the publishers. Telscom did the main compilation and editing, so as to provide final manuscripts to the publisher. The book is published later than expected due to high volume (579 pages) unexpected. The book (ISBN I 58603 007 8) titled 'On the way to Information Society: Five years of European ACTS Research on Intelligence in Services and Networks' can be ordered at IOS press The project also provided inputs to INFOWIN and ACTSLINE projects for wider information dissemination from Domain-5 projects.
