MAIN OBJECTIVES

ACTSLINE is an umbrella project of ACTS program covering results from more than 200 proejcts with the following objectives:
1. To capture and consolidate the achievements of the ACTS programme (in particular guidelines and trials results).

3. To channel the results to key audiences outside the ACTS community.
4. To facilitate the streaming of selected ACTS results into industrial and market exploitations of solutions based upon advanced communications products, services and applications.

These objectives are realised by
§ Producing summaries of the programme's results (in particular guidelines and trials results) in a form that is suitable for non specialist readers,
§ Producing targeted packages of results for the business sectors with an important role to play in the launch or uptake of advanced communications services,
The following sectors are addressed:
§ Telecommunications network operators
§ Standards bodies
§ Corporate network managers
§ CATV
§ Regulators
§ Consultants
§ Flexible working (including disabled people)
§ Education
§ Learned societies

§ Promotion of these packages of results to key decision makers within the sectors,
§ Extending the library of trials reports and product opportunities emerging from the ACTS programme,
§ Analysing four scenarios for the application of advanced communications services to specific business activities and produce roadmaps of the pre-competitive steps needed for commercial exploitation of the technology.

The activities of the project work were distributed into 5 workpacakges. Telscom was active in all 5 WPs and contributed significantly in all the tasks. In particular Telecom operators sectors, regulators sector and standards bodies were co-ordinated by Telscom. In addition to these, Telscom was responsible for content management of ACTSLINE web site and channeling briefings production.

Telscom's contribution
Telscom was one of the main contributor in the project from the conception of the project proposal to successful delivery of results to show major impact of ACTS programme to European and Swiss telecom sector stakeholders.
Telscom was the WP1 leader for consolidation of Guidelines. They were responsible to co-ordinate among different chain group chairmen and editors for interactive harmonising process. Telscom provided the BA chain rapporteur to facilitate the synergy between NI and BA Chain group Guidelines. They compiled all Guidelines, produced summaries and published in various media. All ACTS Guidelines were incorporated into the ACTSLINE web space and the CD-ROM which were distributed at international level
Within WP2, TELSCOM took the responsibility of producing the programme level overview addressing all domains and chains results. The work thus produced has become a reference document for all the projects and to the Commission authorities in particular. This document has been accessed by thousands of engineers across the globe from ACTSLINE web space. This document was used for channelling the consolidated results to different business sectors, by addressing the top management key persons through presentations in person.
Telscom maintained a high level links by engaging Mr. Hans Pfyffer who was the director of Swiss Telecom and Dr. David Newmann who was the vice director of Department of Telecommunications, who had an access to the right people and business sectors addressed by TELSCOM. We also had a marketing and Web specialist who maintained high quality technical platform for the interactive communication links.
Within WP3, Telscom was responsible for organising multiple public events, presentations to high level business sectors, preparation of business sector briefings, Publication of consolidated results in various publications across Europe, maintain the state-of-the-art technical content web site, etc.. Telscom co-ordinated maximum number of publications, including special issues of COMTEC addressing the ACTS projects with Swiss involvement. Number of business sectors briefings were produced, printed and distributed in various events. These documents and associated CD-ROM were officially distributed by the Commission during TELECOM'99 and IST'99 as a mirror of ACTS results. At the end of the project, a special issue addressing Switzerland was also produced and distributed to key players of business sectors.
Within WP4, TELSCOM collected the trials results from more than 30 projects, structured them in an agreed format and were disseminated through our web-space and CDROM. The potential exploitatable technologies were identified from the project results and the information was distributed among the projects. Telscom developed a 'Competitive Access' business case which has been addressed by IST projects and are the issues of ongoing projects. They also contributed to learned societies sector by liaising with publishers and educational sectors.
