Abstract
(Englisch)
There are two primary objectives of the SUSIE project:

(A) To extend the results of trials in ACTS projects by integrating charging in IP/ATM networks in a novel way to address the particular needs of the school community by way of Virtual Classroom trials.

(B) To establish the basis for Premium IP convergence charging in the context of a usage charged ATM network with prioritised IP.

Achievements:
§ Provision of network and application capabilities (ATM backbone, and ADSL and ISDN access lines) for 5 (March, May, November (2), December) Virtual Classroom events during the reporting period.
§ Co-operation enabled between SUSIE and the European broadband network QUANTUM, for the use of an IP-over-ATM 'Managed Bandwidth' connection between Basel and Berlin on 24-25th March. This was subsequently covered in an issue of the IEEE Communications magazine, and a QUANTUM publication.
§ Externally published reports were written by:
- S. Morgan: article for an education magazine, and
- M. Potts: summary of aspects associated with the preparation and performance of the Virtual Classroom session, from the point of view of (mainly) the interaction with QUANTUM.
§ Definition and implementation of the joint SUSIE/DIANA demonstration scenario on the EU stand at Telecom'99 (Geneva, October).

Martel contribution:
§ Planning of the 5 Virtual Classroom sessions with the Basel school (staff and students).
§ Organisation (network planning, link ordering, access connectivity, testing and support) of two co-operations between SUSIE and QUANTUM for the provision of IP-over-ATM 'Managed Bandwidth' connections between Basel and Berlin on 24-25th March, and 20-21 May.
§ Contributions through audio conferences to discuss Trial B, Deliverables, comments from the Technical Audit, and matters arising from the Integration Weeks and the Virtual Classroom sessions.
§ Assistance with the topic work to be performed in the Basel school, with the Virtual Classroom sessions, and with the general e-mail and telephone communication with the other schools.
§ Reports were written by:
§ Assistance given for the installation of the ISABEL application in Dublin, and the successful installation and testing of the ISABEL application over the 3xN-ISDN lines (384kbit/s) between Dublin and Basel.
§ Contribution to all Deliverables (editor of Deliverable D7: 'Project Recommendations')
§ Preparation for - and attendance at - the Plenary Meeting in Kinsale (17-18th May).
§ 2 terminals (1x SGI + 1x PC) were installed in the International School in Basel.
§ Organisation of connectivity via a new route (IP tunnel) to Canada, for the later SUSIE sessions.
§ Organisation of RSVP traffic sources for SUSIE from DIANA.
§ Preparation of presentation for - and attendance at - the QUANTUM MBS-users' Workshop, and the QUANTUM Technical Audit, as a representative of a user-project.
