The SINGADS work program focused on the development and demonstration of a strategy for integrating aerosol data sets comprising:
A common data exchange standard that is sufficiently comprehensive to include relevant metadata with the data observations, and sufficiently flexible to accommodate the variety of aerosol parameters and measurement techniques encountered
A quality assurance procedure that guarantees the internal integrity of data files conforming to the data exchange standard
Qualitative guidelines on the comparability of different measurement techniques for aerosol parameters
A searchable data catalogue, the GAW station information system GAWSIS (from a collaboration with EMPA) containing key descriptive features of individual data sets.
The SINGADS strategy was demonstrated via the construction of a demonstration dataset of aerosol chemistry measurements. SINGADS identified a realistic strategy for integrating aerosol datasets from diverse sources, and has not only put that strategy into effect, but has more importantly made available to the scientific community the tools used, so that the process of aerosol data integration can continue beyond SINGADS.
