Abstract
(English)
The IMS-SIMON project is a co-operation of partners from Japan, USA, Canada and Europe. It is aiming on the development of means and methods for the monitoring of machining process in flexible manufacturing systems. Especially the area of one-off and small batch production covers a wide range of applications in manufacturing and is characterised by various cutting conditions. The developments in the IMS-SIMON project will achieve control of the machining processes in flexible manufacturing systems. They will be focused on flexible monitoring solutions for milling and turning processes. In the Japanese region also the grinding process is considered. A modular monitoring system will be designed that can be tailored to customised monitoring solutions with a minimum of efforts. The approach follows the industrial demand for an easy factory wide implementation of generic monitoring components.
The objective of IMS-SIMON is to develop a flexible and reliable process monitoring and control systems, which
n integrates all available sources of information, e.g. external sensors, data inherent to the NC and process models,
n is applicable to different machining processes and largely independent of the type of NC and
n is suited for the use as an integrated part of a flexible manufacturing system.

That way, the systems will
n reliably detect process disturbances, e. g. collision, tool breakage and tool wear,
n allow for automatically initiated appropriate response to process disturbances,
n ensure reliable manufacturing of high quality products in flexible manufacturing systems starting with the first workpiece,
n significantly improve the cost/benefit ratio of monitoring systems by providing monitoring solutions adaptable to various machining processes,
n incorporated methods to improve the monitoring performance within the end user production.
The IMS-SIMON developments will impact manufacturing industry by improving information utilisation, flexibility, process reliability and product quality in flexible manufacturing systems. Furthermore, it will accelerate the integration of quality and monitoring capabilities into machine tools and control systems.
