The objective of the project is to develop a system for clinical biomechanical assessment by professional service providers based upon the use of a reference multi-media database of upper limb movements created within the project. The project consists in producing a system which : · is clinically useful for the analysis of upper limb movements, · can allow the monitoring of changes in upper limb function which occur over a period of time during the rehabilitation process by comparison with standardised test data, allows studies of the natural history of a range of neurological disabling conditions, · allows the quantification, by users without specialist knowledge of technology, of outcomes of rehabilitation processes and procedures, · allows the monitoring of interventions used with patients during rehabilitation and recovery, · can be used as an aid in the training of lifting and handling skills in order to reduce back injuries, · provides a method and database, based on defined Outcome Measures, for the evaluation of upper limb function after stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, and other defined neurological deficits. In order to evaluate patient's rehabilitation improvement, a test set of arm's postures has been selected. The Fugl-Meyer test has been proposed by the clinical partners. Following their instructions, we have selected video sequences of arm motions including: aduction/abduction, flexion/extension and pronation/supination movements. Based on magnetic sensors, the Flock Of Birds (FOB) device has been used for capturing and recording arm's motions from a real person performing postures from the test set. Data acquisition to capture position and orientation from sensors is made in real-time. Data acquisition using motion captures techniques has been performed with Flock Of Birds device. An anatomical converter is used to convert the sensor data into the anatomical rotations of the hierarchical representation of the body. The human animation processing is being performed on Track files format. Of course, one of the important items this year has been the successful (as far as the European Commission is concerned) completion of the DRAMA Project. However, although the major (financed) effort is over, much remains to be done before the CD planned is on the bookshelves.
