Abstract
(Englisch)
There is an urgent need for improved standards and measurement equipment for acceptance and periodic tests of machine tools. About 75% of the new machine tools do not conform to their specifications. This causes production problems with machine tools, loss of production time, extra adjustments or repairs and a shorter use of life of expensive machine tools. There are no complete and easy methods to use standards for acceptance and periodic tests of machine tools. The measurements of machine tools take a lot of time and are not accurate enough because the applicable measurement equipment is not available.
The main objectives of the project are to develop
a) a uniform method for acceptance of a machine tool,
b) clear and uniform instructions for carrying out machine tool tests,
c) a new measuring instrument for accurate machine tool measurements (laser interferometer with three laser beams) and to develop methods for using the instrument,
d) a method to identify the reasons of deviations and to make possible corrections.
The project has been started 1997-12-01. A list of machine tool standards, which are included in the investigation of this project, has been prepared and accepted. Definitions of the objects of the machine tools which are under investigation and methods of performing the workpiece tests have been made.
A model for turning centres how to find the allowable machine tools deviations on the base of the workpiece properties, i.e. its geometrical and dimensional tolerances, is produced, evaluated and improved. The model also can be used to estimate the workpiece tolerances from the measured machine tool deviations. The model is currently under test by machining test pieces on machine tools of the partners, that were already tested according to ISO standards. A corresponding model for machining centres is produced and will be refined. Due to the more complex operations on machining centres compared with turning operations the model for machining centres has to rely on more assumptions and simplifications.
A working prototype of the new laser interferometer has been manufactured and demonstrated. It measures distance and two angles (pitch and yaw) simultaneously and dynamically. A prototype for fast alignment of a laser interferometer has been designed and produced. The laser interferometer has been tested in two laboratories and is - with ist software - now under test in industrial sites of the partners.
A first version of a guide on the application of ISO test standards is produced. This guide shall be included in the model for the machine - workpiece relation. As an addition of the guide uncertainty estimates for different test methods will be established and included.
As a further step proposals for the ISO committee on machine tools will be prepared.
The preparations for a seminar are made. The seminar will be held in Graz, Austria, 2000-11-13/14, and will be a joint seminar with a CRAFT project named 'An investigation into new ISO machine tool performance standards for dynamic, thermal and volumetric calibration of machine tools', in that some partners of MULTIBEAM are also engaged.
