The project EUROPATH
The two goals of the European project within the section TELEMATICS have been: (1) to analyze the key elements of a moderne telepathology system, and (2) to develope the key components of a really working system. It turned out that the most important of these components are: (1) a server allowing a remote quantification of the desoxiribonucleic acid (DNA) within the cell nuclei (DNA cytometrical or ploidy data), (2) a multipurpose database, and (3) an interface for using many different microscopes which can be remotely controlled. This control has to be independent of the types and the specification of the single microscope.
The Swiss part in EUROPATH
The Swiss part was integrated in the workpackage 'REMOTE QUANTITATION' of the whole European project. The workpackage was directed by Prof.Dr.med. K.D.Kunze, Dresden.
Within the scope of the project 'REMOTE QUANTITATION' three tasks have been assigned to the group in Basel: (1) collaboration in the preparation of the implementation of the sub-project 'Remote quantitation system' (RQS) by developing the 'user needs'; (2) testing the RQS (Fig.1), and (3) development of a user-friendly pilot system for an interactive discussion of the morphological features of all the objects which have been measured in the DNA ploidy-analysis. This 'interactive consulting system' (ICS) was designed for a general use. A general use has to be independent of a remote quantitative analysis and has to allow a interactive interpretaton of the results of the DNA analysis on cytological images.
