The aim of this EU research project is the development of a novel transplantation system for the healing of articular Gartilage defects by using autologous chondrocytes in an alginate matrix. The research participants cover the necessary expertises needed, such as for cell culturing techniques (Department of Rheumatology, University of Zurich), the celI construct characterization (Institute for Biochemistry, University of Cologne>, the surgical interventions in experimental animals (Linköping, Sweden>, the MRI analysis (Cambridge, England>, the biomechanical characterization of the construct tissue (Kuopio, Finland) and the morphometric analysis (Santander, Spain>. Expertise and service provided to this research project by the group in Bern was the histological processing of all animal tissues, the light microscopic analysis, the reporting on a descriptive and quantitative basis of the in vivo results as weil as the critical discussion of the results with those partners that had planned and undertaken the animal experiments.
