Abstract
(English)
The objective of this EU-project was to evaluate and summarise the European activities and available results concerning the estimate of greenhouse gas emissions from arable and animal agriculture in the framework of a Concerted Action. The results will be published by the means of a series of reports on:
1. Measurement results and emission factors (Task 1)
2. Measurement technologies (Task 2)
3. Greenhouse gas inventories (Task 3), and
4. R&D needs and active groups (Task 4).
The project considered biogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and of substances that could indirectly cause emissions off-site. In detail, these are biogenic emissions of the gases N20, CH4, 002, NH3 and NO, as well as nitrate lost from arable crops and animal husbandry. In some cases, available information on sinks for greenhouse gases in agricultural Systems were included. The focus of the project was on N20 and CH4 from agricultural soils, CH4 from animals and animal wastes, and 002 production from decomposing humus. The project did not address emissions from forests, wetlands, and other natural ecosystems, nor those caused by agriculture-derived deposition to these ecosystems. The results of the project will be used to further develop and improve the methodology for greenhouse gas inventories under guidance of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (I P00).
State of progress: The project partners have delivered all the necessary information for the final reports. The reports are currently being completed by the project coordinator and should be published in 2000. The proceedings of the first workshop (Stuttgart 1997), the second workshop (Göteborg 1998), as well as the final conference (Stuttgart 1999) are published. Some selected papers to the posters presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of the journal 'Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems' due to be published in 2000.
