The aim of the project was to build an infrastructure for computer graphics animation and virtual reality. It is be structured into several modules with various degrees of integration. The main modules deal with animation of multibody systems and deformable objects, collision detection, body animation with motion tracking, facial animation, morphing, 3D object extraction from images and animations, 3D immersive manipulation, distribution. MIRALab, University of Geneva is involved into two main topics: Collision detection (WP5, T9), Facial Animation (WP4, T6).
The fifth year was dedicated for creation of demonstrators exhibiting the possibilities and features of the WP5 T9 and WP4 T6 tasks. These demonstrators were implemented as clients of the PA VRML network exchange system, with smooth collaboration between the partners.
For facial animation (WP4, T6), an application generating facial expressions was created, illustrating all the possibilities of the facial animation library. A front-end application was created for allowing simple user interaction with real-time interactive display. Communication with the PAVRML server was then performed in real-time (online mode) or with a prerecorded sequence (offline mode). Generated facial expressions could then be displayed directly by any client connected to the server. For collision detection (WP5 T9), a collision detection client was implemented for computing collisions between user- defined objects as well as any object specifically tagged from the PAVRML server. The client both works in online mode (real-time collision detection) or in offline mode (collision detection of a prerecorded animation) and copes well with the topology changes of the objects currently in the server. A front-end was created for visualizing the objects currently computed for collisions.
These two demonstrators were successfully used in the PAVRML network along with all the other modules produced by other partners.
