Economical needs caused technical changes in countries of central Europe in the field of manufacturing which resulted in arising new technologies. One major aspect here is the fieldbus technology. A standardisation circle developed therefore the European Standard EN 50170. Because of these activities, European industry has a lead in this area compared to other industrial nations. In order to secure this lead, it is necessary to distribute this technology to Countries of Central Europe. Then, the entire European industry would be able to compete with other industries due to their stronger position.
Fieldbus technology is appearing in all industrial branches that are involved in automation. It includes production and process engineering, power stations and building control. The big number of various companies having an advantage from this new technology gives an impression of the high value of this technology for the European industry. These facts make the necessity for and the advantages of the transfer of this technology to the Central European Countries clearly visible, which forms the main goal of the TRAFICC project.
As a first activity of the technology transfer, researchers will be trained in order to become experts. Then, demonstrators covering the different automation areas machine automation, medical automation and robot based flexible production, are specified, constructed and evaluated. Each of the systems should have multi-vendor capability, where products of various companies are integrated in one system. They will be designed considering the specific industrial characteristics and conditions, reflecting the specific situation of the related industry.
Using this basis, the new technology will be transferred to Central European industry. The related transfer actions are different workshops containing technology basics, fieldbus device and system knowledge. Further transfer and project result dissemination activities include participation in expert conferences, common publications and additional workshops. A large incorporation of industry in all phases of the project, e.g. while establishing the requirements for the technology transfer services or during the evaluation of the demonstrators, guarantees a sufficient consideration of the industrial viewpoint.
The benefit of the project is a strong support of industry. This is done by establishing new competence centers for the fieldbus technology in Countries of Central Europe which are in a close co-operation with the existing from the EU area. This results in more powerful researching, developing, training and consulting activities for European industry in general.
The consortium consists of the six participants ISBE Bern, TU Budapest, TU Munich, Czech TU in Prague, TU Vienna, and TU Wroclaw. The demonstrators being under construction are located in Budapest (medical automation), Prague (robot based flexible production), and Wroclaw (machine automation). The participant from Munich co-ordinates the TRAFICC project and supports them together with the project partners from Bern and Vienna.
