Abstract
(English)
We have created a formal collaborative network of European groups working on the clinical (neurology, neuropathology), genetical and functional (in vitro and in vivo models) aspects of peripheral neuropathies, in particular hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies. Clinical and research efforts are coordinated between the different members to enhance collaboration and to provide training support to young scientists and clinicians. Guidelines for phenotypic classifications of neuropathies have been established, an inventory of resources for genetic studies has been collected, reliable methods for DNA diagnosis have been developed, and promising animal models have been generated. Furthermore, the network provides a forum to discuss ongoing scientific efforts in basic and clinical research, to convey information to the affected patients and the lay community, and to deliberate on the ethical implications of genetic data.
