Abstract
(English)
This project proposed solutions for mediating the requirements of external users, network operators and service providers needs for access to each others management systems whilst respecting system integrity, confidentiality and means of auditing contractual negotiations.
The project aimed to develop and verify, by means of trials in real environments, mechanisms which ensure the required integrity of inter-domain access to TMN based management systems. Access in this context includes both inter-TMN access and User to TMN access. Constituent objectives were :
- To propose a policy and techniques for integrity for communication in an inter-domain, multi-provider, management environment including user access to management
- To design and construct these mechanisms within scenario environments
- To validate the proposals and mechanisms by two trials involving TMN domains in National Hosts and real users
- To disseminate results to a wide audience and to influence the ongoing standards process by contributions to standardisation bodies.
The method was as follows. An overall concept and integrity policy was established for inter-domain TMN communications taking into account work done in RACE projects (PRISM, ICM, and SAMSON), regulatory policies (particularly INP) and the status of work in standardisation bodies (ITU-T, ISO and ETSI) and forums (ATM, OSI & NM Forums). It defined the information, which should and should not be exchanged and the integrity requirements for such exchanges. The overall system design took into account the needs for practical implementation and was used to structure the work of the project. Design and prototype construction drew heavily on the work of RACE projects particularly PRISM for VPN service management models, ICM for TMN platforms, Q and X interfaces and Q Interface Adapters and SAMSON for security mechanisms. Trial environments used National Hosts and other networks in Norway, the UK, and here in Switzerland. Real users and applications (provided by TCOM) were involved. The scenarios were specified in detail so as to ensure that the trials provided a comprehensive validation of the proposed solutions.
