Abstract
(Englisch)
Main Objectives
The project aimed to develop and verify, by means of trials in real environments, mechanisms which will ensure the required integrity of inter-domain access to TMN based management systems. Access in this context includes both inter-TMN access and User to TMN access. Constituent objectives were:
· to propose a policy and techniques to guarantee the integrity for communication and information in an inter-domain, multi-provider management environment including user access to management.
· to select the appropriate mechanisms from the emerging standards to support inter-TMN security with open interfaces and to design and construct these mechanisms within scenario environments
· to validate the proposals and mechanisms by two trials involving TMN domains in National Hosts, connected networks and real users with managed applications and network components.
· to disseminate results to a wide audience and to influence the ongoing standards process by contributions to standardisation bodies
Technical approach
The project was organised in 5 workpackages: Administrative and technical management (WP1), Security policies (WP2), Design and development (WP3), Trials (WP4), External liaison (WP5).
Telscom Contribution
Telscom was the technical manager for the consortium during the first year. However, due to changes in the consortium and importance of Swiss trials in the project, TELSCOM took the responsibility for trials co-ordination. During the first year the project demonstrated their first prototype of inter-domain management withoug any security component during the technical audit.
The project also adopted more open views on trends of technical development in view of importance of security in management system in the deregulated market and multivendor/multioperator environment. In this respect 2 platforms were adopted. The HP Openview platform which is a defacto standard for management platform was acquired by TELSCOM to give a push to development work on standardised TMN protocols.
Regarding security, the project adopted the generic upper layer security application as a target to be implemented to avoid platform specific security, which may not be of interest for multiple operators. TRUMPET built up very close co-operation with MISA project which implements network layer Xcoop interface functionalities which was used by TRUMPET to control network elements. Thus TRUMPET contributed more at X user interface (between VASP and PNO-OSs; and between user and VASP) level to implement the secure management package. The work had significant influence on the Eurescom project P710, for the specification work for defining the security issues for inter domain management systems.
Within WP2 TELSCOM has contributed in risk analysis, security policy requirements, Access control specifications and design following X.741 standards across X. Interface. The WP2 results have been included in the ETSI and Eurescom work on security policies for inter-domain management. They were also the topics of multiple publications from the project.
WP3 was more involved in defining the architectural issues for the design of security of management applications. Telscom was involved in addressing X.741- Access control issues across X interfaces. Telscom also contributed on the relative merits of JAVA implementation over TMN. They also implemented Access control specific GUI using JAVA.
In WP4, Switzerland was one of the trials centre. Telscom has offered both Basel testbed with an MOU with Swiss National Host and EPFL user environment. Because of EPFL's involvement and the established communication links between EPFL and Swiss National Host in Basel, the trials were conducted in EPFL. The test scenario involved ATM Switches and TMN OSs for managing the network and service layers, operating across 2 or more domains following X interface standards. The tele-medicine application was used for trials.
The second trial was at Scottland with interactive commercial applications.
Within WP5 , Telscom was responsible for liaison and representing TRUMPET at concertation meetings and at Chain meetings. Multiple MoUs were achieved among different projects and organisations for mutual benefit. TRUMPET hosted an open day to demonstrate the results to the general public and in particular to NIM Chain during Oct. 98. TRUMPET also were responsible for the Guideline development on the security issues. The results were fed to DOLPHIN information package.
TRUMPET and MISA project demonstrated the results during the IS&N'98 conference in Antwerp (Belgium) in May'98. The final technical audit and the demonstration to the experts were held at Sophia Antipolis during Oct. 98, which was very successful.
The project also implemented the TMN_Corba gateway with a close co-operation between PROSPECT/Flowthru project.
