Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Français)
Over a three-year period, the LEVERAGE project has developed, implemented, and field-trialed a broadband multimedia infrastructure linking three European sites: CULC (Cambridge University Language Center, UK), INT (Institute Natonal des Télécommunications, France), and DIT-UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain).
This infrastructure has supported a complete network-based collaborative communication environment. A language learning application has been built on this infrastructure. This application has been intensively evaluated from a pedagogical point of view at the three sites.
The users (linguists, students, and computer learning specialists) have shaped the technical approach. This solution scales to large systems and provides a platform for a wide range of end-user requirements. The LEVERAGE solution (application driven but not application specific) has met campus-wide and Pan-European needs.
The work carried out by the LEVERAGE Partners in 1998 has resulted in the final implementation of the LEVERAGE system on and between the three sites.
From the first two project years, the three sites already benefited from an adequate campus-wide multimedia network. The main requirement that remained was to find a solution for the interconnection of all three sites. During the second year, an ATM-based interconnection between CULC and INT had been successfully used. However, since no telecommunication operator could offer a transnational transport service at the time of network design, the ATM-based alternative was abandoned and ISDN was chosen for the third year.
Trials have proven the practicability of international network-based collaboration with 512kbit/s ISDN intersite connections. This solution has successfully supported all educational and networking objectives.
