The project aims to establish the foundations for the revision of VSS standard 40 024a regarding the assessment of roundabout capacity in Switzerland. The current standard, mainly based on simple configurations and non-saturated traffic conditions, no longer reliably represents contemporary situations, particularly complex roundabouts (multi-lane and turbo roundabouts), dense urban contexts, or interactions with surrounding infrastructure. The project is based on a comprehensive review of national and international literature and a synthesis of existing research, in order to identify relevant methods and their domains of applicability. The results will provide a structured and well-founded basis for the future revision of the standard, proposing clear, coherent methodological elements that can be directly integrated into a subsequent normative process

Le projet vise à établir les bases nécessaires à la révision de la norme VSS 40 024a relative à l’évaluation de la capacité des carrefours giratoires en Suisse. La norme actuelle, principalement fondée sur des configurations simples et des conditions de trafic non saturé, ne permet plus de représenter de manière fiable les situations contemporaines, notamment les giratoires complexes (multi-voies, turbo-giratoires), les contextes urbains denses ou les interactions avec d’autres infrastructures. Le projet repose sur une analyse approfondie de la littérature nationale et internationale et sur la synthèse des recherches existantes, afin d’identifier les méthodes pertinentes et leurs domaines d’application. Les résultats fourniront une base structurée et argumentée pour la révision de la norme, en proposant des éléments méthodologiques clairs, cohérents et directement mobilisables dans un futur processus normatif.

The objective of the project is to propose adaptations to VSS standard 40 024a in order to modernize the assessment of roundabout capacity in Switzerland. The current standard, designed for simple configurations and non-saturated traffic conditions, shows limitations when applied to complex roundabouts (multi-lane, turbo roundabouts) and urban contexts. The project aims to integrate findings from national and international literature to better represent saturated traffic, network interactions, and the growing impact of pedestrians, cyclists, and changing user behaviour. It also seeks to clarify the applicability domains of the methods and to provide practical tools adapted to practitioners.

L’objectif du projet est de proposer des adaptations de la norme VSS 40 024a afin de moderniser l’évaluation de la capacité des carrefours giratoires en Suisse. La norme actuelle, conçue pour des configurations simples et des conditions non saturées, montre ses limites face aux giratoires complexes (multi-voies, turbo-giratoires) et aux contextes urbains. Le projet vise à intégrer les connaissances issues de la littérature pour mieux représenter le trafic saturé, les interactions avec le réseau ainsi que l’impact des piétons, cyclistes et nouveaux comportements. Il s’agit également de clarifier les domaines d’application des méthodes et de fournir des outils pratiques adaptés aux utilisateurs
