Abstract
(Englisch)
Main Objective
The goal of CA$hMAN is to study, develop, implement, verify and compare charging and accounting schemes for ATM networks with negotiation procedure which allow the users to negotiate contract parameters. This will be achieved by the development of appropriate pricing models, their efficient implementation in hardware and software, and the extensive use of National Host facilities for validation and for acquiring important user feedback.
Technical Approach
The project was organised in 4 workpackages corresponding to concepts and algorithms development (WP1), Hardware design and development (WP2), Software development (WP3) and system and user trials (WP4).
TELSCOM Contribution;
TELSCOM was very active in trials scenario development, provision of infrastructure for experiments and trials for validating the concepts and demonstrations. TELSCOM was also technical adviser to orient the project so as to have maximum impact on the standards development.
During the first year, the trials scenario was developed and liaised with WP2 and WP3 for appropriate HW and SW development. The continuous support was given from WP4 for the system design and definition of charging and accounting parameters for implementing the right algorithms in WP1. The results of such co-ordination lead to the development of multiple guidelines in the NIA chain and 2 contributions to standards organisation (ITU). The contribution has become the baseline docuement for futther refinement, in ITU.
The HW and SW components received from the partners were integrated into ATM testbed at Basel, the site of Swiss National Host (SNH). The experiments set up were defined and first round experiments were carried out during 1996. The results were demonstrated to multiple interest groups from operators and industrial groups. The results from Basel testbed were considered as the best results among the 3 sites the experiments were conducted (Norway (OSLO), The Netherlands (Leidshendam) and Basel (CH).
During 1997, the ABR ATM traffic was considered as more important and the chargind issues were not clear for such a traffic.This was also of interest due to IP based application, which were of similar characteristics. Since, no ABR supporting components were available, TELSCOM developed the ATM NIC card to support ABR services which were used for charging experiments. These experiments were carried out in close collaboration with EXPERT testbed and Swiss National host. The MOU was signed between the EXPERT project and CASHMAN for mutual co-operation and trials. The co-operation resulted into multiple experiments with different type of services traffic, applications and users terminals.
The results were so impressive that the project decided to demonstrate the results during the Technical audit in Brussels. The joint demonstration was carried out in Brussels during the technical audit of the two projects with international links to Leidschendam, Basel and Ottawa (Canada). These were the only ATM demos done during the tech. Audit in Brussels.
The demonstrations were so impressive that the ACTS central office requested CASHMAN to demonstrate our experiments to the international audience during Global Networking'97 (ITS) and conference in June between Multiple centres in Europe and Calgary in Canada. These public demonstrations involving multiple centres and remore equipment management and presentation were highly successful. Telscom played a key role in these demonstrations planning and execution.
During 1998, the ABR features were enhanced and multiple experiments were carried out. The final technical audit was held at Oslo duirng Oct. 98 and the project concluded successfully. The results of the project will be brought out in the form of a book, to be published during 1999.
