Main objective of EXPERT project EXPERT project provides ATM network infrastructure for conducting experiments on ATM network performance, for different service types. As one of the major testbed of Europe EXPERT plans to provide more advanced network elements in place through adding new access networks, signalling and management systems to host many ACTS and other projects to validate the new concepts before entering the commercial market. In the framework of 3rd call project, VIKING project proposal for developing VB5.2 interface as an extension to BONAPARTE project was integrated to EXPERT project, where TELSCOM participated. In addition, the network support to International distributed conference was also included during this framework as a workpackge 6 of EXPERT, in which TELSCOM is a partner.
Swiss contribution; There are multiple organisations from Switzerland (ASPA, Ascom, EPFL and Telscom ) participating in this project during different phases and in different workpackages. TELSCOM participated in development of VB5.2 interface (VIKING) workpackge and in the workpacakge 6 to support the IDC'99 and IST'99 conference by deploying and operating the interoperable heterogeneous networks. VB5.2 interface: VB5.2 is an extension of VB5.1 interface developed in the EXPERT and BONAPARTE projects, to provision open broadband access interface. Within this framework limited number of partners were active (Lucent (NL), Italtel (I), NTUA (GR), Telscom and ASPA (CH)). Telscom was involved for developing access and service node common specifications, implementation of SAAL and call control signalling modules and responsible for integration and testing. The HW system came from Lucent and Italtel. NTUA provided some part of signalling and interfacing with REFORM project for the usage of some functionalities. The whole system was developed, integrated and testing in Basel testbed and was demonstrated in TELECOM'99 to the general public. IDC'99: The international distributed conference (IDC'99) was organised with the mail center in Madrid and control center in Basel. More than 15 centers in Europe, Japan and Canada were linked through heterogeneous network technologies. The whole operation was centered in Basel. The content provision was organised by GINA. The conference was also linked to TELEWORK'99 in Denmark. The real time internet webcast provided remote users to follow the presentations from their workplace. Later, IST'99 was also supported with links to openday workshop in Basel, with some speakers from Basel talking to IST'99 in Vienna. TELSCOM also contributed to 2 Guidelines addressing the VB5 interface both in NI chain group and in the BA Chain group.
