Abstract
(English)
In the year under review, many experiments were performed on the EXPERT ATM test bed in Basel. Alcatel's contribution with the Alcatel test system was mainly in the EXPERT work package (WP4.1) which analysed the traffic behaviour of applications in order to map the application requirements and the network performance.
ATM networks were tested to obtain network performance statistics on a local, national and international network scale. The measurements of the applications and ATM networks were compared and applications were then selected and allocated to suitable ATM service categories.
An analytical tool developed for the Alcatel test system for the tests on the EXPERT test bed generated input information for simulations. The knowledge gained from real traffic experimentation was extrapolated, using simulators to obtain accurate results on larger networks.
The objective of the project was to derive recommendations for network operators from the experience gained from traffic experiments and additional simulation studies. In addition, the ranges of different network performance and QoS parameters could be discussed, and for a variety of application categories, the ATM layer QoS requirements could be compared.
