The aim of the BLS pilot project is to work with industry partner Stadler Signalling to develop a solution for automated shunting operations (GoA 4) on the premises of the Spiez workshop and to test it under real operating conditions. To this end, a BLS RABe 528 (MIKA) vehicle will be fitted with additional hardware and software. The focus is on a vehicle-based solution that can utilise existing infrastructure with as few structural modifications as possible. Following its development, the technology will be tested during a one-year pilot operation process with a back-up driver on the premises of the Spiez workshop, in order to gain insights into its safety, reliability and operational integration in real-world operations. The project forms part of the nationwide ATO sector programme and supports the implementation of the ERTMS strategy. In addition to technical issues, the study also examines the impact of automation on processes, regulations, roles, responsibilities and staff from the perspective of Human and Organisational Factors (HOF). The technical, operational, regulatory and organisational insights gained are intended to lay the foundations for a scalable industry solution in the future within the interoperable rail sector. At the same time, they form the basis for a potential follow-up project, which will further develop the automation of shunting movements between workshop and platform areas, thereby enabling a further step towards the automation of the entire service preparation and follow-up process.
