We continued to collect blood from potentially affected Immotile-Cilia-Syndrome (ICS)-families until the end of the project planned (1998). Blood was sent to Professor S. Antonarakis' group at the division of medical genetics, CMU, Geneva, for a genome-wide linkage analysis. There is a publication on the way, which will be prepared by Dr. J.L. Bloum (first author) as a result of the common efforts of the centers involved. ˆDue to the activities during this BIOMED project we hope that we will be able to better diagnbse patients with such ciliary problems.
In order to study the problem of ICS on a new basis, we begun to study model situations where the problem can be investigated more basically. One of these possibilities is an investigation of the cilia of the Irish Woolfhound. These animals have a number of clinical problems in common with the human counterpart and since these dogs are animal patients we are in collaboration with Dres. PD S. Arnold and I. Reichler from the Animal Hospital of Zurich. As the BIOMED project comes to an end, we will maintain our well established collaboration with a number of colleages we appreciate since the start of this project.
