Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The purposes of the INSIGNIA project were to define the architecture for an Intelligent Net-work incorporating B-ISDN signalling in an ATM environment. The technical achievements reached by the projects may be summarised as follows:
¨ The project proved that the Intelligent Network architecture can deliver complex multi-media services to a high standard, this even on the used prototype equipment.
¨ The concept of the IN-Switching Sate Model devised within INSIGNIA has contributed to the satisfactory conclusion reached by the project. A novel concept of finite state ma-chine using objects to represents network attributes together with a comprehensive inter-face protocol has been defined evaluated and submitted to standardisation bodies.
¨ The new concepts required the development of a generic message set for the SCF to SSF, and SCF to B-IP interfaces for application in the broadband environment. The generic INSIGNIA B-INAP has been defined to accommodate the requirements of different type of applications. This was successfully demonstrated in trials.
¨ The support of remote SCP working in the ATM network has been proved. This involves the use of NNI signalling across the network. INSIGNIA came to the conclusion that the proposed B-ISDN standards require little enhancement to support this facility.
¨ In addition the project showed the use of intelligent multi-media B-IP under the assump-tion that the End User will have CPEs incorporating the PC technology.
The motivation of Siemens Schweiz AG for this project was surely not to participate to re-search work that would have a direct impact on our products. Our goal was much more to gain a good expertise on the really promising domain of Broadband Intelligent Network in order to better serve and assist our customers' in the future deployment of IN services. Con-sidering this, our goal was fully reached and even more.
Siemens Schweiz AG participated to the extensive theoretical work in both the development of the SSM and the B-INAP. Furthermore we had to implement some of the needed function-ality (MTP3b for remote SCP access) on the Siemens SSP. Our company could abundantly benefit from the know-how transfer obtained by the contact with the academic world, other manufacturers and network operators involved in this project.
