The FERNS Doctoral Network will train a talented cohort of 15 Doctoral Researchers (DRs) to embed circular approaches into electronics design in support of the mutual reinforcement of the EU’s Green and Digital transition ambitions. The generation of e-waste and depletion of critical raw materials associated to the intensive use of electronics call for urgent interventions to embed circularity into future electronic products. In answer to this call, the FERNS project brings together ten partners and 9 associate partners with expertise across the entire electronics value chain to address the key challenges underpinning the field of sustainable electronics. FERNS aims to incorporate eco- design and co-creation in the electronic products development phase; develop novel sustainable materials and integration processes for next generation sustainable electronics, targeting three specific application areas (Fitness, Short Use Health and Farming); create novel models promoting societal and economical acceptance and appropriation of sustainable electronics. The FERNS DRs will meet these ambitious objectives by working creatively and synergistically across the disciplines of material science, engineering, social science and business to acquire a holistic perspective of the field of sustainable electronics. The FERNS Doctoral Network merges research excellence with comprehensive (technical and transversal) training and exposure to industry to address a critical skills gap in sustainable and circular electronics expertise, which must be addressed urgently to drive and accelerate the EU’s transition to Circular Electronics, as demanded by the Green Deal overarching strategy, aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In parallel it builds momentum in ‘looked for’ skills in emerging “green” technological sectors, where labour and skills shortages are acting as a drag on the EU’s future competitiveness.
