Der Klimawandel erfordert neben konsequenten Emissionsreduktionen auch Technologien zur aktiven Entnahme von CO2 aus der Atmosphäre. Asphaltbeläge bieten aufgrund ihres hohen Materialeinsatzes ein bislang wenig genutztes Potenzial, dauerhaft Kohlenstoff zu speichern. Das Projekt «Asphaltbeläge als CO2-Senken» verfolgt das Ziel, Asphaltstrassen von reinen Emissionsquellen zu aktiven Instrumenten des Klimaschutzes zu entwickeln. Im Fokus steht die Entwicklung biokohlehaltiger künstlicher Gesteinskörnungen für Asphaltmischungen.
Die biokohlehaltigen künstlichen Zuschlagstoffe werden zunächst durch die Auswahl eines geeigneten Bindemittels und die Optimierung des Verhältnisses zwischen Biokohle und Bindemittelmatrix sowie des Produktionsprozesses entwickelt. Die hergestellten Zuschläge werden hinsichtlich Festigkeit, Dauerhaftigkeit, Temperaturbeständigkeit und CO2-Bilanz bewertet und für den Einsatz im Asphalt optimiert. Vielversprechende Zuschläge ersetzen volumenäquivalent konventionelle mineralische Zuschläge in Asphaltmischungen. Dabei wird die Mischungszusammensetzung an mögliche Veränderungen des Bindemittelbedarfs und des mechanischen Verhaltens angepasst.  Parallel dazu wird die Netto-CO2-Bilanz der Zuschläge und Asphaltmischungen berechnet. Abschliessend wird die Wiederverwendbarkeit der Asphaltmischungen untersucht, um die Kreislaufwirtschaft zu fördern und die langfristige CO2-Senke zu beurteilen.

In addition to consistent emissions reductions, climate change requires technologies for actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Due to their high material consumption, asphalt pavements offer a hitherto underutilised potential for permanently storing CO2. The project ‘Asphalt pavements as CO2 sinks’ aims to transforms asphalt roads from sources of CO2 emissions into active instruments of climate protection. The focus is on the development of biochar-containing artificial aggregates for asphalt mixtures.
The biochar-rich artificial aggregates will be first developed through selecting an appropreate binder, and optimizing biochar to binder matrix ratio and production process in terms of strength, durability, temperature-behaviour and CO2 balance for their use in asphalt mixtures. Promising aggregate variations will replace conventional mineral aggregates in asphalt mixtures on a volume equivalent basis. The mixture composition is adapted to possible changes in binder requirements and mechanical behaviour. Comprehensive performance evaluation of the mixtures will reveal possible application areas and limitations. At the same time, the net CO2 footprint of the artificial aggregates and corresponding asphalt mixtures is calculated. Finally, the reusability of the asphalt mixtures is being assessed in order to promote circular economy and assess the long-term carbon sink potential.

Das Ziel des Projekts ist die Entwicklung von biokohlehaltigen künstlichen Gesteinen, die die Speicherung von CO2 in Asphaltmischungen ermöglichen. Die Zusammensetzung und die Herstellungsverfahren der künstlichen Zuschlagstoffe werden auf der Grundlage ihrer Eigenschaften als Asphaltzuschlagstoffe ausgewählt, wobei die mechanischen Anforderungen so ausbalanciert werden, dass eine mit herkömmlichen Asphaltbelägen vergleichbare Leistung gewährleistet ist und gleichzeitig eine CO2-Speicherung ermöglicht wird. Darüber hinaus soll die Wiederverwendbarkeit der Materialien am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer gewährleistet sein.

The project aims to develop biochar-rich artificial aggregates that would enable storing of CO2 in asphalt mixtures. Composition and manufacturing processes of the artificial aggregates are selected based on the performance as an asphalt aggregate, balancing the mechanical requirements to ensure comparable performance to conventional asphalt pavements while enabling CO2 storage. In addition, the reusability of the asphalt mixtures at the end of the pavement life must be guaranteed for asphalt use as CO2-sink and the circular economy.
