Abstract
(Englisch)
In the project WAND, two key technologies are combined to take advantage of each other. In introducing the ATM technology into the Wireless Technology, the guarantee of Quality of Service (QoS) and the multimedia service support become feasible, whilst the combination of ATM with Wireless Technology supports the Terminal Mobility in the ATM domain and thus extends the Integrated Services to the wireless domain. In short, WAND tries to extend ATM access transparently to mobile users. The WAND Demonstrator is devoted to the verification of these benefits.

The key objectives of the project are:
·To specify a wireless access system for ATM networks in a customer premises domain that maintains the service characteristics and benefits of the ATM Networks;
·To demonstrate and carry out user trials with the selected user group and test the feasibility of a radio based ATM access system;
·To promote the standardization, notable in ETSI, of Wireless ATM Access system as developed in the project.

The focus areas are the following: 1. Radio Physical Layer (Workpackage 2) which is conformed to the ETSI standard HIPERLAN II - in the frequency band of 5.2 GHz at 23.5 Mbps. 2. Medium Access Control Layer (Workpackage 3) which is a newly developed protocol called MASCARA - in particular, the support of Quality of Service (QoS) is granted. 3. The Control Software (Workpackage 4) of the Mobility-enhanced ATM Switch and that of the Mobile Terminal (MT) -ranging from the standard ATM signaling (ATMF UNI 3.1), Call Control, Connection Admission Control, Radio Resource Management, Mobility Management Control to Network Management. The Control Software of the Mobile Terminal (MT) is also part of this focus area.
Ascom has been responsible for the Control Software of the Mobility-enhanced ATM Switch and for
the functional module 'Call Control' of the Mobile Terminal.

The following activities have been undertaken during the project lifetime:
·Actively contributed to the target-system design and WAND-Demonstrator specification;
·Specified the Functional Architecture Model (FAM) of the Control Software of the Mobility-enhanced ATM Switch and that of the Mobile Terminal. This has been used as a common reference for the definition of interfaces between different functional modules, for which different partners arc responsible;
·Specified the functional modules of the Mobility-enhanced ATM Switch for which Ascom has been responsible: 'Connection Manager', 'Resource Manager', 'Call Control and ATM Signaling Protocol ATMF UNI 3.1', 'ATM Adaptation Layer for ATM Signaling (Q.SAAL)', ',ATM Adaptation Layer for Mobility Signalling (M.SAAL)', ATM Adaption Layer Type 5 (AAL5)', 'Inter-Process Communication Tool ComEx' and 'Timer Process';
·Coordinated the evaluation process in choosing the commercially available signalling software for the Mobile Terminal;
·Chose the signalling software for the Mobile Terminal;
·Implemented all the above-mentioned functional modules, for which Ascom has been responsible;
·Integrated and tested all the Ascom modules with success and without delay;
·Conducted and coordinated the integration and testing on the Work package 4-level;
·Provided the Control Software of the Mobility-enhanced ATM Switch and that of the Mobile Terminal as a whole to the Work package 5 for system integration, on time;
·Assisted the Work package 5 in system integration and testing;
·Contributed to and edited the Work package 4 deliverable 4D2 entitled 'Specification:
Requirements of Control-Plane Modules';
Contributed to and edited the Work package 4 deliverable 4D5 entitled 'Prototype: Control-Plane
Modules (software)';

The main results achieved are the following:
·Detailed know-how on the control software of the mobility-enhanced ATM switch in a Wireless ATM System
·Detailed know-how on the signaling stack of the Mobile Terminal in a Wireless ATM System
·Experience in the design, implementation and integration & testing of the control software of a Wireless ATM system
·Based on the patents granted or being granted a cost-effective Wireless ATM System can be built
·National and international contacts
·Publicity through public presentations, publications and patents.
